Purpose of this blog

This blog has been created to provide all sorts of information relating to training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, for all those who are joining the Indian Police Service.

I feel that the information provided through formal channels leaves thousands of doubts in our minds. And there is no way one can get this information unless one personally knows someone in the service. My endeavor is to make as much information as possible known to all interested.

Clarify your doubts about anything that you have in mind with respect to training. All questions are welcome. I shall try to answer all of them.

I will be putting up certain documents, book, articles, etc for your perusal.

Hope this helps!

  1. Sir I would like to know the details of physical training. Like how much running everyday and every week, how hectic it'll be, minimum amount of fitness I should have so I should enjoy my training now and not cry about it once it begins.

  2. Hi Lokesh

    Sorry for the late reply.

Physical Training(PT) is a part of outdoor training. Outdoor training consists of PT, long distance running (cross-country), firing, equitation (horse riding), swimming, etc. All of these disciplines are taught in morning (0545-0730 hrs) and evening (1500-1830 hrs) outdoor sessions. Everyday the schedule is different but in the initial month or two, focus is on PT and long distance running.

Morning outdoor session starts at 0545 hrs. You have to report at 0530 after shaving, grooming and dressing up which means you have to get up by 0515 hrs latest.
Morning outdoor session lasts till 0730.
0730-0900 wash, have breakfast and get ready for indoor session
    0900-1330 indoor classes
    1330-1500 lunch
    1500-1830 evening outdoor session
    2000-2130 dinner

Sometimes------no: often, the lunch break and the time between evening outdoor and dinner is interrupted by an official function. So do not count on getting too much rest.

PT test standards (excellent rating for men) are:
1.6 km run in 6 mins 30 secs,
    32 pushups,
    32 situps,
    8 chinups,
300m shuttle run within 52 secs,
    21 inches jump-and-reach, and
    7 feet standing broad jump.

Mind you, these are standards for getting graded as excellent in PT, for men. For women, standards are different. You are trained to get to these standards. A test to assess you is done in the month of March. A majority of trainees do reach these standards by then. So even if you can do only 50 percent of what is mentioned above, you will reach excellent grading within a month and a half or so. But there is no harm in training in advance and hitting the ground running.

Regarding long distance running: the first one is 5 km, then 7, 10, 12 and finally 16 km. Only the 16 km run is marked. All the runs before it are just practice runs for the final run. You have to run 16 km within 90 minutes to survive the cut. Long distance running can take a toll on your knees, shin bones and ankles in the high-intensity-little-rest schedule in the academy. So it is advisable that you train to run 5 to 6 km before coming to the academy.

You should also consult a sports physician to see if certain aspects of your physiology and health (such as knocked knees, bowed legs, pronation, supination, low bone density, low haemoglobin, asthma, etc) could be problematic to you during training so that you can take requisite corrective measures.

Train to swim as well if possible, it will save you from a lot of pressure.

Academy will train you quite well in equitation, firing, and other outdoor disciplines but it wouldn't hurt to be familiar with stuff before you try it at NPA.

Most important is not to get injured. The schedule will be demanding especially for those who have not been active in the last 1 to 2 years on account of UPSC preparation.

    1. Sir I'm having HCM(hypertrophy cardiomyopathy). Running for so long and such kind of activities will be dangerous for my health. Will this running and other kind of running activities be excused or I should lose hope on becoming a IPS.
